Military Parole in Place

A possible path to a green card for certain family members of U.S. service members and veterans.

Overview

Military Parole in Place (PIP) is a discretionary USCIS policy that lets certain family members of active-duty service members, Selected Reserve members, and veterans request parole while remaining in the United States. For someone who entered without inspection, a grant of parole can remove a major obstacle to applying for a green card without leaving the country.

Parole in place is not an immigration status, and approval is not automatic. A qualifying military relationship is an important positive factor, but past criminal or immigration history can matter too.

Policies affecting military families are under regular review and can change. Contact us promptly to find out where things stand for your family.

Common questions

Does parole in place give me a green card?

No. It is not a status. It can remove one specific obstacle, after which a family member may be able to apply for a green card if otherwise eligible.

How long does parole last?

Parole is generally granted for a limited period, such as one year at a time, and may be extended in appropriate cases.
